Reference timetable - Icelandic as a second languageThe reference lesson table assesses the learning needs of students with Icelandic as a second language in various subjects based on their level of proficiency in Icelandic and age. Each individual must be assessed separately; these are only indicative criteria. It is necessary to assess whether students need adapted study plans in certain subjects. Plans in academic subjects should be adapted based on the set competence and assessment criteria for the subjects so that students can achieve the skills and knowledge that are aimed for. Students come to the country with knowledge in various subjects and need to have the opportunity to use study materials in their own language if possible, but at the same time they should be given the opportunity to increase their Icelandic vocabulary and understanding of the subject matter in Icelandic, with the help of supporting materials, such as simpler texts, pictures, videos and varied vocabulary work.
The companion document Competence areas and competence frameworks in Icelandic as a second language was produced in parallel with the renewal of chapter 19.3 of the National Curriculum Guide for Compulsory Schools. It contains a more detailed competence framework than those in the curriculum chapter, in addition to discussing each competence area of language learning in more detail. It is intended to provide a fairly detailed description of what language learning is about and thus support professional work with students.
Competence frameworks from chapter 19.4 Competence criteria for Icelandic as a second language. The classification is by proficiency level, i.e. from pre-level – level 3.
